Vietnam’s “Shrimp Capital” gradually recover after the lockdown

Bởi Meksea Team - October 19, 2021

MEKSEA.COM –  Up to now, the shrimp industry in Soc Trang has overcome challenges during the period of implementing social distancing thanks to ensuring the prevention and control of Covid-19. Timely meet consumer demand in both domestic and foreign markets. This is a big opportunity for shrimp farmers and seafood processing companies in this locality to restore the production chain in the remaining months of the year.

Soc Trang is known as “the shrimp capital” of Vietnam. The output of farmed and processed shrimp for export in Soc Trang in recent years has continuously ranked among the top in Vietnam. Therefore, it is necessary to urgently restore the linkage chain from farming, processing to export. This not only contributes to achieving the goals of the Soc Trang shrimp industry but also plays an important role in striving to achieve the turnover target of US$8.5 billion Vietnam has proposed in 2021

Soc Trang is one of the localities with the ability to recover the supply chain of the shrimp industry quite well because the rate of vaccination against COVID-19 for workers at seafood processing factories in the province is high.  In addition, the solutions issued to facilitate the transportation of goods within the province and inter-provincially have gradually become more favorable and processing factories quickly recover with a large number of employees have returned to the factories.

Now there are 22 shrimp processing factories in Soc Trang province. Most businesses have also built production plans suitable to the new situation to meet orders at the end of the year. However, the source of raw shrimp for processing depends on more than 70% of locally farmed shrimp production, so the relief of the pressure of the disruption of the raw material supply chain of enterprises needs the cooperation of shrimp farmers in the province.

In addition, farmers are advised to raise shrimp at an appropriate density to reach a large size, apply modern farming models to achieve high-quality shrimp, especially no use chemicals and antibiotics prohibited during rearing.

Currently, the processing activities of enterprises in Soc Trang are gradually restored when the disease is well controlled, the price of shrimp is likely to increase, the damage rate on shrimp is controlled, etc. This is an optimistic sign for shrimp production to increase as planned in the following months.
