Vietnam Squid and Octopus Exports show strong recovery in early 2026: Reaching USD 232 million, up 16% year-on-year

Bởi Joy Nguyen - June 4, 2026

MEKSEA.COM – Vietnam squid and octopus exports recorded encouraging growth in the first four months of 2026, reaching USD 232 million, up 16% year-on-year. While Asian markets continue to drive demand, exporters are facing mixed performances across regions, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for the industry in the months ahead.

South Korea continued to be the leading destination for Vietnam squid and octopus exports, generating USD 87 million during the first four months of 2026, an increase of 17% compared to the same period last year. The market accounted for 37% of total export value and contributed the largest share of industry growth.

The country’s stable seafood consumption, established import channels, and strong demand for processed squid and octopus products have made it a key pillar for Vietnamese exporters. However, the heavy reliance on a single market also presents potential risks, as changes in import policies, inventory levels, or consumer demand could quickly impact export performance.

Japan Maintains Stability While Thailand and China Accelerate Growth

Japan remained the second-largest market, with exports reaching USD 54 million, up 8% year-on-year. Although the growth rate was more moderate, Japan continues to offer long-term value thanks to its consistent demand and high standards for food safety, product quality, and supply chain reliability.

Meanwhile, Thailand and China emerged as the fastest-growing destinations. Exports to Thailand reached USD 31 million, while shipments to China totaled USD 21 million, with both markets recording impressive growth of 40%. These results indicate a strong recovery in regional seafood demand and reinforce Asia’s role as the primary growth engine for Vietnam’s squid and octopus industry.

At the regional level, exports to ASEAN countries increased by 35%, while exports to China and Hong Kong rose by 34%, further demonstrating the growing importance of nearby Asian markets.

US and EU Markets Face Continued Challenges

In contrast, exports to the United States declined by 7%, reaching USD 9 million. Although the US represents a smaller share of total exports, it remains an important indicator of global seafood demand and purchasing trends.

The European Union experienced a more significant downturn. Export value fell 20% to USD 8 million, with major markets such as Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands reporting sharp declines. The slowdown reflects weaker demand and increasing compliance requirements related to traceability, sustainability, legal sourcing, and environmental responsibility.

As global buyers place greater emphasis on supply chain transparency, exporters targeting the EU market must continue strengthening documentation, quality control systems, and sustainability practices.
