MEKSEA.COM – Vietnam’s tilapia industry is witnessing remarkable export growth in 2026 as global demand for affordable and high-quality seafood continues to rise. With Brazil remaining the largest buyer and emerging markets showing strong momentum, Vietnam tilapia exports are entering a new phase of international expansion.

Vietnam Tilapia Export Rockets 92% in April and 151% for first four months of 2026
Quick view
1. A Breakout Year for Vietnam Tilapia Export
The numbers leave little room for doubt: Vietnam tilapia export is undergoing a structural transformation. In April 2026, total export turnover reached $11 million USD, representing a year-on-year increase of 92% compared to April 2025. More tellingly, cumulative Vietnam tilapia export value for the first four months of 2026 hit $49 million USD – a staggering 151% increase over the same period in 2025.
These figures, compiled by VASEP (the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers), signal a decisive shift in the fortunes of Vietnamese tilapia on the world stage. Once considered a secondary export commodity overshadowed by pangasius and shrimp, tilapia is now asserting itself as a high-growth pillar of Vietnam’s seafood trade portfolio.

2. Brazil Remains the Largest Market
Brazil continued to dominate the market structure of Vietnam tilapia exports, accounting for more than half of the industry’s total export value. In April 2026, exports to Brazil reached USD 6 million, representing approximately 61% of total monthly tilapia exports.

Brazil Remains the Largest Market
Cumulative exports to Brazil during the first four months of the year totaled USD 26 million, equivalent to 54% of the entire industry’s turnover. This confirms Brazil’s position as the most important destination for Vietnamese tilapia products.
However, exporters still face several challenges in this market. Different technical regulations among Brazilian states, along with increasing competition from domestic tilapia producers, may create pressure for Vietnamese suppliers in the coming months. Therefore, businesses need to closely monitor policy changes while maintaining stable product quality and competitive pricing.

3. Emerging Markets Create New Opportunities

Emerging Markets Create New Opportunities
- Brazil remains the key destination, Vietnam tilapia exports are also expanding rapidly into several promising markets worldwide.
- The United States ranked as the second-largest importer, although export performance weakened in April. Monthly export value dropped 42% year-on-year to USD 2 million due to tariff pressures and intense price competition. Nevertheless, cumulative exports to the U.S. still reached USD 10 million during the first four months of 2026, showing a slight increase of 3%.
- Saudi Arabia emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets. Exports to the country reached USD 400,000 in April, up 33% compared to the previous year. This growth reflects increasing seafood consumption trends in the Middle East and creates new opportunities for Vietnamese exporters.
- The Dominican Republic also maintained positive momentum, with April exports increasing 23% year-on-year to USD 300,000. Total export value during January-April reached USD 2 million, up an impressive 204%. The strong performance highlights the growing presence of Vietnam tilapia exports across Latin America beyond the Brazilian market.
- In Europe, Belgium stood out as the leading EU destination. Export value to Belgium doubled in April, reaching USD 300,000. Total exports to the EU market during the first four months of 2026 increased 23%, indicating improving demand for Vietnamese seafood products across Europe.
