Besides, after the sales strongly increased in 2020 due to the impact of the covid-19 pandemic, the demand for canned tuna in markets decreased in 2021. Moreover, an increase in transportation costs and production had pushed up the price of finished canned tuna, which reduced the demand for imported tuna in the markets. Instead, the demand for importing fresh, frozen, and frozen steamed tuna loin into markets tends to increase.
Up to now, the US is still the largest tuna import market of Vietnam. In 2021, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US accounted for nearly 45%, equivalent to more than 338 million USD, up 21% over the same period in 2020. Particularly in December, tuna exports to the US increased spectacularly 114% compared to the same period in 2020, reaching nearly 42 million USD.
Besides, in the EU market, after positive growth in November, tuna exports to this market in December reached over 11 million USD. Bringing in export turnover of 144 million USD, up 6% over the same period in 2020.
Notably, in December 2021, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Spain increased sharply, up 149% over the same period in 2020.
In addition, Vietnam’s tuna exports to CPTPP countries also recovered strongly in December. The value of tuna exports to this market block in December 2021 reached US$9.5 million, up 33% compared to the previous year. compared with the same period in 2020. This growth is due to strong increase in exports to Mexico and Chile, by 306% and 76% respectively.
In 2022, it is predicted that Vietnam’s tuna exports to the EU and CPTPP markets will make great strides when tariff preferences come into effect again.
