Vietnamese pangasius leverages its advantages in the Chinese market
MEKSEA.COM – According to Vietnam Customs data, in the first half of May 2024, Vietnamese pangasius exports to China and Hong Kong reached 22 million USD, a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. As of May 15, 2024, cumulative pangasius exports to this market reached nearly 175 million USD, a 14% decrease compared to the same period in 2023.
As of May 15, 2024, China remains the largest pangasius import market for Vietnam. Reasonable prices and delicious meat quality make it an easy choice for consumers in China. In retail stores in China, pangasius prices are recorded to be lower than domestically produced freshwater fish such as carp. Pangasius has become a popular choice for home cooking and even in public restaurant chains.
Exporters are forced to focus on cheaper items as China’s economy slows down, causing consumers to be more cautious and hesitant in spending. With lower prices compared to some domestic fish species such as carp, tilapia, and catfish, pangasius has gained more preference and a solid foothold in this country.
The prices of other white meat fish in China have risen sharply, notably tilapia, due to reduced output, prompting consumers not only in this market but also in the US and some other countries to switch to alternative white meat fish products.
As a white meat fish species, raised in higher layers, pangasius meat quality is clean, nutritious, and virtually bone-free, making it very suitable for children’s menus. Additionally, the fat of this fish species is rich in omega-3, good for health, making it highly favored by families who tend to cook at home for dishes prepared from this fish species.
