Positive prospect for Vietnam’s tuna exports to Australia
MEKSEA.COM – Despite being affected by covid-19, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Australia increased at a high 3-digit rate.
According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first 10 months of 2021, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Australia reached nearly $2.7 million. Which increased by 103% over the same period last year.
Vietnam is currently the third-largest tuna supplier to the Australian market, accounting for 1.6% of the total value of tuna imports to this market. Meanwhile, Thailand and Indonesia accounted for 73% and 23% of the total value of Australia’s tuna imports, respectively. However, in 2021, Australia’s tuna imports from Vietnam increased by 209%, imports from Thailand decreased by 15% and Indonesia increased by 28%.

Tuna products exported to Australia during this period all increased over the same period. The main tuna products exported to the Australian market include canned or bagged tuna in vegetable oil, frozen tuna meat/fillets, frozen tuna cut, etc.
Currently, compared to Thailand and Indonesia, the price of Vietnamese tuna products is lower, which shows that businesses are trying to expand their market share in this market.
Last year, the Australian tuna market was affected by Covid-19. As a result, tuna imports demands also decreased. However, since the end of 2020, the business activities of this country have had many changes to adapt to the epidemic. Therefore the demand for tuna in Australia gradually recovers.
