Vietnam Oyster Exports 2026 Recover Strongly with Taiwan Leading Demand

Bởi Joy Nguyen - June 12, 2026

MEKSEA.COM – According to VASEP, Vietnam oyster exports reached nearly USD 5 million in the first four months of 2026, marking a remarkable 93% increase compared to the same period in 2025. While the recovery reflects improving international demand, the export market remains highly concentrated, with Taiwan accounting for the majority of shipments. The latest data also highlights new opportunities in neighboring and premium markets as Vietnam’s oyster industry continues its recovery.

Vietnam oyster exports rebound after a challenging 2025

According to VASEP, Vietnam’s oyster exports generated nearly USD 5 million during the first four months of 2026, representing a 93% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2025. Monthly export growth remained positive throughout the period. Export value increased by 65% in January, 104% in February, 59% in March, and surged 266% in April compared with the corresponding months of 2025.

Although this growth demonstrates a clear recovery, it should be viewed in context. The first four months of 2025 recorded only USD 2.5 million in exports, significantly lower than the USD 5.7 million achieved during the same period of 2024. As a result, while 2026 has shown strong momentum, export value has not yet fully returned to the level recorded in 2024.

Vietnam primarily exports fresh oysters and chilled oysters, with Asian countries continuing to be the main destination markets.

Taiwan remains the dominant destination for Vietnam oyster exports

Taiwan continued to be the driving force behind Vietnam oyster exports in early 2026. From January to April, exports to Taiwan reached approximately USD 4 million, an increase of 101% compared to the same period in 2025. This market alone accounted for 83% of Vietnam’s total oyster export value, highlighting its critical role in supporting the industry’s recovery.

Taiwan has long been the leading importer of Vietnamese oysters, particularly fresh, chilled, and shucked oysters used in popular local dishes such as oyster omelets and oyster noodles. The market also remains one of Asia’s largest seafood importers, with total seafood imports approaching USD 2 billion in 2024, where Vietnam ranked among its four largest suppliers.

Taiwan maintains high standards for food safety, traceability, product quality, and import inspections including:

  • Food safety certification
  • Quality consistency
  • Traceability
  • Compliance with import inspection standards

Vietnamese oyster producers have continuously enhanced their production and quality control systems to comply with these requirements, helping Vietnam remain one of Taiwan’s trusted seafood suppliers and supporting the steady growth of oyster exports.

Emerging markets create new opportunities for Vietnamese oysters

Beyond Taiwan, several markets recorded notable developments during the first four months of 2026.

  • Laos: emerged as a promising destination, importing approximately USD 445,000 worth of Vietnamese oysters after recording no imports during the same period in 2025. Its close geographical proximity offers significant advantages in logistics, transportation costs, and cold chain management.
  • The United States: also posted impressive growth. Oyster exports reached USD 365,000, an increase of 725% year-on-year. Although the percentage growth was supported by a relatively low comparison base, the U.S. market represents long-term potential for Vietnamese exporters capable of meeting strict regulatory requirements.

Expanding into distant markets requires greater investment in:

  • Cold chain logistics
  • Product shelf life
  • Food safety documentation
  • Stable raw material supply
  • International certification standards

Meanwhile, several traditional markets weakened considerably. Cambodia recorded no oyster imports after purchasing USD 281,000 during the same period last year. Exports to Japan declined from USD 130,000 to just USD 87, while Thailand fell by 72%. These figures indicate that Vietnam’s oyster export portfolio remains relatively concentrated and still requires broader market diversification.

Global demand continues to provide positive prospects. According to FAO/GLOBEFISH, international oyster trade expanded during 2025, supported by growing consumer preference for nutritious, convenient, and sustainably farmed seafood products. Looking ahead, higher-value products such as frozen oysters, shucked oysters, processed oyster products, and retail-ready packaging may help Vietnamese exporters extend shelf life, access more distant markets, and improve export value.
