Potential for Vietnamese clam export in the future

MEKSEA.COM – In recent years, Vietnamese mollusk products, including clam, have not only become popular products in the country but also are one of the potential export aquatic products. It is expected to become one of Vietnam’s key export products in the future.

 

Clam is one of the best dietary sources of vitamin B12, which is crucial for human health. Clam provides a sustainable amount of iron to prevent anemia. In addition, clam is rich in DHA, omega-3 fatty acid, protein, etc which are good for human health, and especially clam is good for children who are in the height developmet period. That is also the reason why clam are favored by many markets around the world.

Clam is not only an important source of livelihood for coastal people but also become a key export product of Vietnam 2 types of clam are commonly raised, which are white clam and Asiatic hard clam, which are considered the main species of farming in most of the coastal provinces of North Vietnam and the Mekong Delta. In which, brown clam, white clam, scallops in boiled, steamed and whole form accounted for the highest proportion.

Up to now, Vietnam has been exporting clam to many markets around the world such as Europe, the US, Japan, ASEAN countries, Korea, China, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, etc with revenues of more than 80 million USD/ year.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Vietnam has been developing a strategy to develop the clam industry in modernization, encouraging the creation of a supply chain and increasing the export of value-added products. In addition, focus on selecting quality breeds, creating products that meet domestic and foreign consumption needs. Moreover, departments also proposed solutions to cut production costs, reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of Vietnamese clam products in the world market.

Besides that, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam also emphasized that it is necessary to apply processing technology to create high-value content in clam exports. In addition, it is necessary to research pharmaceutical and cosmetic products from clam to create VAT products, creating image of clam products of higher quality and better export.
