Positive prospect for Vietnamese pangasius in the Mexican market
MEKSEA.COM – In the first 8 months of 2021, the total value of pangasius exports to the Mexican market reached 43.76 million USD, an increase of nearly 70% compared to the same period last year. This is considered a positive signal and opens up new opportunities for Vietnamese pangasius farmers.
Pangasius is the seafood product imported by Mexico with the largest volume and value, followed by tuna products. Currently, the average export price of frozen pangasius fillets to the Mexican market range from 1.72-1.82 USD/kg. Particularly in August 2021, pangasius exports accounted for 67%, equivalent to 3.84 million USD, up nearly 49% over the same period last year.
Moreover, Mexico is a country with a free trade system with a relatively low import tax rate, ranging from 0-35%. This is also a market in the CPTPP, so the import tax on seafood into Mexico will be 0% from 3rd year.
The export value of pangasius to Mexico increased impressively to triple digits in the second quarter of 2021
In 2021, the number of Vietnamese enterprises promoting pangasius exports to Mexico increased significantly compared to the previous year. In the second quarter of 2021, the value of pangasius exports to Mexico grew impressively from 166 to 232% over the same period in 2020, making Mexico the leading pangasius import market from Vietnam in the Latin America region.
However, in the first half of August 2021, the export value of pangasius to Mexico Mexico increased impressively to triple-digit, down 12.6% over the same period last year. Realizing the potential market, but currently, Vietnam’s pangasius export industry is facing many difficulties from covid-19. From the end of July 2021, up to 50% of pangasius processing factories in the Mekong Delta had to shut down because they were not eligible for “3 things at the factory” or the locality had a case of COVID-19 infection.
Therefore, it is necessary now for Vietnamese pangasius exporters to quickly stabilize production, strictly implement epidemic prevention and control measures, and ensure that the process from farming to production for export smoothly. Hopefully, businesses will quickly recover production to maintain orders and seize the opportunity to export to the potential Mexican market.
