MEKSEA.COM – On November 17, 2024, in Dong Thap province, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a conference to review the pangasius industry in 2024 and discuss solutions to implement tasks in 2025. The conference aims to provide an overview of the development and potential of this strategic product.

1. Production and consumption results of pangasius industry in 2024

Output and farming area
In 2024, the pangasius farming area reached 5,370 hectares, equivalent to 95% compared to 2023. Despite a slight decrease, the farming area in the 2020-2024 period remained stable, ranging from 5,200 to 5,800 hectares. In 2020 alone, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the area decreased significantly.
In terms of output, in 2024, it is estimated to reach 1.67 million tons, equivalent to 99% compared to 2023, showing a stable maintenance in pangasius production.

Export turnover

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), as of October 15, 2024, pangasius export turnover reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% over the same period in 2023. The export price of pangasius fillets ranges from 2,000 to 3,500 USD/ton, depending on the market and export time.

2. Forecast and future challenges of pangasius industry

Although the pangasius industry is growing strongly, value-added products still account for a low proportion, mainly frozen products. The dependence on large export markets such as the US, China and ASEAN countries puts the pangasius industry at a disadvantage if these markets change their policies or have stricter requirements on food quality and safety.

Another important factor is the lack of coordination between processors and exporters, along with uneven product quality, which has significantly affected the reputation and brand of Vietnamese pangasius. This requires the pangasius industry to improve quality, increase value-added products and focus on building a sustainable brand.

By 2030, aquaculture will account for about 59% of total seafood consumption, up from 52% in 2018. The shift from wild capture to aquaculture will continue to meet rising consumption demand, especially for fast and convenient processed products.

3. Pangasius industry orientation in 2025

In 2025, the Vietnamese pangasius industry aims to achieve an output of 1.65 million tons and an export turnover of 2 billion USD. To achieve this goal, the industry will focus on improving product quality, especially value-added processed products, and developing sustainable production. In addition, expanding export markets, applying digital technology in production management, and strengthening international cooperation will be important factors to help the pangasius industry maintain its growth momentum and compete strongly in the international market.
