Vietnam’s Pangasius Exports in April Reached Nearly USD 175 Million

Bởi Meksea-Hien - May 26, 2025

According to VASEP data, in April 2025, Vietnam’s pangasius exports reached nearly USD 175 million, up 4% compared to April 2024. This is a positive sign amid ongoing global market uncertainties, especially due to international tariff policies, particularly from the United States.

The US—once the largest consumer market for Vietnamese pangasius—remains a hot spot. In April 2025, exports to the US reached approximately USD 32 million, an increase of 18.3% compared to the previous month, but down 14.8% year-on-year. In the first four months of 2025, total exports to the US reached USD 101 million, down 1.5%. While the short-term increase is notable, companies remain cautious as the US continues to maintain high anti-dumping duties, and policies could change at any time.

Meanwhile, China and Hong Kong remain the top markets, with April exports reaching USD 44 million, up 7.4% year-on-year. However, total exports for the first four months slightly decreased to USD 149 million, down 2.1% compared to the same period last year. Pangasius exports to the EU in April remained stable, up 9%, with a total of over USD 61 million in the first four months of the year.

A surprising bright spot is Brazil. As of the end of April 2025, pangasius exports to Brazil reached USD 63 million, up 67% compared to the same period last year. This is a positive sign for efforts to diversify markets. Other markets such as Thailand and the Netherlands also recorded stable growth, reaching USD 24 million and USD 17 million respectively in the first four months of the year.

Tariff Suspension – A Short-Term Opportunity, Risks Remain For Vietnam

The US’s decision to temporarily suspend tariffs for 90 days on over 75 countries, including Vietnam, brings positive sentiment to the market and allows for continued negotiations between the two sides. However, this is only a temporary solution, and significant risks remain, as the “America First” policy continues to shape the US’s trade strategy in the future.

Given Vietnam’s high degree of economic openness. Particularly in the pangasius export sector – the country is highly vulnerable to fluctuations in the international market, including tariffs, raw material costs, inflation, and global capital flows.
