Canned fish is set to take the spotlight in 2024?
MEKSEA.COM – Canned fish is set to take the spotlight in 2024. The canned fish industry has been experiencing a growing trend in retail sales in the United States, reaching a revenue of $2.7 billion in 2023.
Canned fish has become an increasingly popular food trend in the US market, with numerous companies creating locally sourced seafood products. According to market research company Circana, canned fish sales in the US have risen from $2.3 billion in 2018 to over $2.7 billion in 2023. In 2023 alone, canned fish became a focal point in prominent news outlets such as The New York Times, Food & Wine, CBS News, and the Associated Press.
The recent popularity of canned fish can be attributed to the younger generation seeking more sustainable protein sources, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, viral TikTok videos have made canned seafood a trendy pursuit.
Norway exported 371 tons of cod in the first week of 2024, a slight decrease compared to the final weeks of 2023 and a significant drop compared to most weeks in 2023.
Regarding cod fillet exports, in the first week of 2024, Norway exported 903 tons of cod fillet, of which 739 tons were sent to the EU at 20.98 NOK/kg. The price of cod fillet at the beginning of 2024 is nearly 4 NOK/kg higher than in 2022 and 2023. This increase is primarily due to the high prices of fishmeal and fish oil, the weakened Norwegian krone, and inflation impacting higher cod fillet prices.
