MEKSEA.COM – According to statistics from ANCIT (Associazione Nazionale Conservieri Ittici e delle Tonnare, the Italian fish canning companies association), Canned tuna leads production and consumption, everyone eats it (99%), on the whole more than one Italian out of three (36%) consumes it 2-3 times a week.

In 2020, Italy consumed 2 billion euros of canned fish products, of which 1.4 billion euros were canned tuna products, this is the largest number ever, equal to a national production of over 80,300 tons and a consumption of over 160,000 tons (about 2.67 kg per-capita).

Over the past 10 years, the volume of canned tuna exported from Italy has more than doubled (up 122%), reaching 30,500 tons, worth more than 200 million euros. Most of these exports are shipped to other EU countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia. However, countries outside the EU such as Canada, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Israel also import tuna from Italy.

This trend can also be seen in the development of 2021 when ANCIT announced that Italy’s canned tuna exports in the first half of 2021 increased by 13.5% year-on-year.

Overall, since 2011, the market price of canned tuna in the country’s market has increased by 31.3%, volume by 18%, and imports by 12.5%.

The canned fish market share in the Italian market, which includes anchovies, mackerel, salmon, and herring, has reached a turnover of EUR 405 million in 2020.

It can be seen that the demand for tuna, especially canned tuna, in many markets around the world is very large. The challenges for Vietnam’s seafood industry are to create high-quality tuna products to expand the consumption market to these potential countries.
