The potential of Vietnam’s value-added products to Malaysia in 2024
MEKSEA.COM – Vietnam’s value-added products to Malaysia record many positive signs. Vietnamese pangasius products consistently rank among the most preferred whitefish in numerous markets, and Malaysia is no exception. Situated within ASEAN—one of the world’s largest free trade areas—Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Malaysia have witnessed steady growth in recent years.
Data from Vietnam Customs
According to data from Vietnam Customs, in October 2024, pangasius exports to Malaysia exceeded USD 3 million, up 19% compared to October 2023. Cumulatively, in the first 10 months of this year, exports to this market reached USD 29 million, an increase of 21% year-on-year, with positive growth recorded in most months except August 2024. July 2024 marked the highest monthly export turnover of pangasius to Malaysia since early 2023, at over USD 4 million, up 52% compared to the same period in 2023.
The export structure of Vietnamese pangasius to Malaysia mainly comprises frozen pangasius fillets under HS code 0304. In the first 10 months of 2024, exports of this product alone to Malaysia reached nearly USD 24 million, an 18% increase year-on-year.

Additionally, exports of other frozen or dried pangasius products (whole fish, portions, etc.) exceeded USD 3 million in the same period, up 19% year-on-year.
Finally, while the export value of value-added pangasius products remains modest, their remarkable growth in exports to this central Southeast Asian nation is noteworthy. In the first 10 months of 2024, value-added pangasius exports to Malaysia amounted to over USD 1.5 million, an impressive 115% increase year-on-year. Growth in this segment has been particularly striking month by month: January saw a 526% increase, March 399%, May 325%, June 315%, and July 404%, compared to the same periods last year.
According to the International Trade Centre (ITC), in the first eight months of this year, frozen pangasius fillets under HS code 0304 were the most imported whitefish product in Malaysia, with a value of USD 18 million, up 38% year-on-year. They account for 42% of Malaysia’s total import value of whitefish products globally. Vietnam was the largest supplier of frozen pangasius fillets to Malaysia, accounting for 96% of Malaysia’s imports under HS code 0304.
In recent years, trade relations between Vietnam and Malaysia have seen many positive developments, reflecting a strong connection and vast potential for cooperation between the two nations. Moving forward, significant room remains to further enhance bilateral trade between Vietnam and Malaysia, especially against the backdrop of both nations striving to capitalize on regional trade agreements such as RCEP and CPTPP. These agreements provide a solid foundation for continuous growth in trade and investment between the two countries, including the export of Vietnam’s pangasius products.
