Vietnam’s tuna exports to France rebound after a year of decline
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood exporters and producers (Vasep), after a downturn in 2024, Vietnam’s tuna exports to France have made a strong comeback in the first half of 2025. Export revenue surpassed USD 1.5 million, more than double the same period last year. According to the International Trade Centre (ITC), France was the EU’s third-largest tuna importer in 2024, with consumers favoring convenient, safe, and sustainably certified seafood.
Vietnam mainly ships frozen loins/fillets and canned tuna to this market. Among them, frozen fillets and loins recorded the sharpest rise, with consistent shipments throughout the first six months of 2025.
French Market Dynamics
In 2024, France purchased around 107,000 tons of tuna, primarily in canned form, making it one of Europe’s biggest tuna-consuming countries. Annual per capita consumption is estimated at 1.3 kg—lower than Malta’s 3.4 kg but still among the EU’s top levels. Canned tuna demand continues to rise, supported by the popularity of quick, protein-rich, and nutritious meals. Major retail brands such as Petit Navire, Saupiquet, and Rio Mare—many already carrying MSC certification—are shaping consumer choices.
Competitive Landscape
France’s tuna sector is characterized by fierce competition. Within the EU, Spain and Portugal dominate supply thanks to advanced processing industries, proximity advantages, and well-recognized retail brands.
Outside the bloc, Ecuador is the largest player, leveraging a strong fishing fleet and preferential tariffs that keep its canned tuna highly competitive in terms of price. Other countries, including Seychelles, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, have been strengthening their presence. Vietnam, in particular, has carved out a niche with frozen fillets/loins and certain value-added processed products.
Prospects Ahead
Looking forward, Vietnam’s exports to France could expand further in 2025 if businesses fully capitalize on tariff incentives and meet the EU’s sustainability and green consumption requirements. However, realizing this potential will require stronger government support—especially in tackling issues such as raw material shortages and delays in the issuance of catch certificates—to ensure exporters can respond swiftly to market demand.
