Vietnam’s tuna exports increased by nearly 60%
MEKSEA.COM – According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s total tuna export turnover reached more than 462 million USD in the first five months of the, up 59% over the same period last year.
Vietnam’s frozen tuna loin (HS 0304) exports increased by 128.5% over the same period last year, reaching over 316 million USD, accounting for 68% of total tuna export turnover. This shows that Vietnam’s tuna exports in the first 5 months of 2022 have recovered and grown after covid-19.
In the first 5 months of this year, the US, EU, and CPTPP continue to be the 3 main frozen tuna export markets of Vietnam, in which, exports to the US significantly increased by 102%. Specifically, the value of tuna exports to the US reached more than 251 million USD, up 102% over the same period last year. As a result, the US remains the largest tuna import market in Vietnam, accounting for nearly 55% of total tuna export turnover.
According to the latest updated statistics of the International Trade Center (ITC), in the first four months of the year, the US increased frozen tuna fillets (HS 0304) from Vietnam and decreased imports of others.

In the EU market, in the first 5 months of the year, the export value of tuna to this market reached 68 million USD, up 9% over the same period last year. In which, tuna export value to Germany reached 10.5 million USD, up 100%. Currently, the EU market still favors fresh and frozen tuna products. Most of the imported products are used for Japanese restaurant chains, Asian restaurants and retail stores, schools, etc.
In the CPTPP market, in the first five months of the year, the total value of tuna exports to this market reached 54.5 million USD, up 46% over the same period in 2021. Canada accounted for more than 42% of the total tuna exports to this market with 23.4 million USD, up 72%. The value of tuna exports to the Japanese market also increased 6% to 14 million USD, Mexico increased 35%, reaching 6.5 million USD, and Chile increased 59%, reaching 4 million USD.
In addition, tuna exports to the Philippines, Egypt and Russia in the first 5 months of this year also grew positively.
