Vietnam’s top 3 tuna export markets
MEKSEA.COM – In the first quarter of 2022, Vietnam’s tuna exports reached 259 million USD, up 72%, of which Vietnam’s top 3 tuna export markets are the US, Canada, and Saudi Arabia.
Top 1. The US
The top 3 tuna import markets of Vietnam are the US with 137 million USD, Canada with 14 million USD and Saudi Arabia with 10 million USD. In which, the total value of Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US increased by 116% over the same period last year.
Previously, in 2021, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US reached 297,205 tons, worth 39 million USD, up 27% in volume and 6% in value compared to 2020. In 2021, Vietnam is the 2nd largest tuna supplier for this market, accounting for 16% of the import market share in terms of tuna volume of this market.
Currently, tuna catch in the East Pacific region is relatively low, so this year, it is forecast that Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US will continue to increase in the first half of this year.

Top 2. Canada
In the first quarter of 2021, tuna exports to Canada reached 14 million USD, up 70% in value over the same period in 2020.
Vietnam’s tuna exports to Canada include frozen tuna meat/loin, accounting for 75% of the total value of tuna exports in the first 2 months of 2022.
According to statistics from the ITC, Canada is currently the 16th largest tuna import market in the world. With a population of nearly 38 million and a policy of welcoming 400,000 immigrants a year, Canada’s demand for seafood (including tuna) is growing.
In 2021, Vietnam’s tuna exported 19,271 tons to Canada, up 9% over the same period in 2020. This year, Vietnam’s tuna accounted for 9.9% of the Canadian market share and ranked 3rd.
Top 3. Saudi Arabia
Although it has only cooperated in the last 9 months, Vietnam’s tuna exports to this market have increased rapidly.
In the first quarter of 2022, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the Saudi Arabian market reached 10 million USD, accounting for 4% of the total value of tuna exports in the first 3 months of 2022.
Saudi Arabia mainly imports frozen tuna meat/loin from Vietnam, code HS0304, accounting for 99% of the total export value of tuna to this market.
Previously, Vietnam’s first tuna shipment was exported to Saudi Arabia in July 2021. After 9 months, Vietnam’s tuna export turnover to this market increased from $85 00 in July. 2021 to nearly 5 million USD in March 2022.
As of 2020, Saudi Arabia is the 12th largest tuna import market in the world, this is a potential market for Vietnam’s tuna exporters.
