Vietnam’s pangasius exports to China and the US continue to recover in the final months of the year
MEKSEA.COM – China and the US are the two largest import markets for whitefish globally. Vietnam is the second-largest supplier of whitefish to both of these markets, primarily providing pangasius. Frozen pangasius fillets remain the main product these two nations import from Vietnam.
According to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), in the first seven months of 2024, China’s whitefish imports reached over $1 billion, a 14% decrease compared to more than $1.2 billion in the same period in 2023. In the US, imports amounted to over $863 million, a 21% decline from over $1 billion in the same period in 2022. Previously, in 2023, China’s whitefish imports totaled nearly $1.78 billion, a 27% drop compared to over $2.4 billion in 2022. The US saw imports of $1.75 billion, a 31% decrease from nearly $2.6 billion in 2022.
Regarding the US market, in the first half of 2024, more than $184 million worth of whitefish from Vietnam was imported into the US, a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, over $357 million worth of whitefish from China was imported into the US, a 17% decline compared to the same period. In 2023, China was the largest supplier of whitefish to the US, with a total import value of $775 million, accounting for 44% of the total whitefish imported by the US from the global market. Vietnam followed China as the second-largest supplier of whitefish (mainly pangasius) to the US in 2023, with nearly $330 million, representing 19% of the total whitefish imports to the US market.
As for the Chinese market, by the end of July 2024, Russia was the largest supplier of whitefish to China, with nearly $625 million, a 21% drop compared to the same period last year. Vietnam was the second-largest supplier of whitefish to China, with a value of $162 million in the first seven months of the year, a 22% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Previously, in 2023, Russia was also the largest whitefish supplier to China, with a value of over $1.1 billion, accounting for 62% of China’s total whitefish imports from the global market. Vietnam followed Russia as the second-largest supplier of whitefish (mainly pangasius) to China in 2023, with $339 million, representing 19% of China’s total whitefish imports.
China and the US are two of the most critical markets for Vietnam’s pangasius export industry. With signs of recovery and growth in the first months of this year, along with favorable objective conditions, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to these two markets have the potential to grow in the final months of the year.
