Vietnam Tuna Exports to Chile: Chile’s Tuna Imports Reach a 5-Year Peak
According to data from the International Trade Centre, total tuna imports of Chile increased from USD 104 million in 2021 to USD 156 million in 2025, nearly 50% growth over five years. In 2025 alone, imports rose by 8% compared to 2024, confirming a stable recovery trajectory.
However, this growth has not been linear. After a sharp increase in 2022, imports slowed in 2023 before rebounding strongly in 2024–2025. This pattern reflects a resilient demand base, with Chile gradually expanding sourcing beyond traditional suppliers.
For exporters like us, this confirms that Vietnam tuna exports to Chile are entering a market that is not only growing but also becoming more dynamic and open.
Supplier Landscape Shifts: Competition Intensifies
Chile’s import structure in 2025 highlights significant changes:
- Thailand remains the dominant supplier (USD 63 million)
- Colombia follows (USD 25 million)
- Ecuador (USD 23.8 million)
- China (USD 23.6 million)
- Vietnam ranks fifth (USD 15 million)
While Thailand, Colombia, and China increased exports, Ecuador and Vietnam experienced declines. This indicates that Chile is diversifying its sourcing strategy, prioritizing flexibility rather than relying heavily on a few traditional partners.
For Vietnam tuna exports to Chile, this means competition is intensifying, not only on price but also on supply reliability, responsiveness, and product alignment.
Vietnam Tuna Exports to Chile: Decline in 2025, Strong Rebound in 2026
From our perspective, 2025 was a challenging year. Export value dropped from USD 18 million in 2024 to USD 13 million in 2025.
However, the trend reversed quickly. In the first two months of 2026, Vietnam tuna exports to Chile exceeded USD 3 million—up 125% year-on-year.
This recovery suggests that Chile remains a viable and responsive market for Vietnamese exporters, especially when supply conditions and pricing become more competitive.

Import Trends: Flexibility and Value-Added Products Lead
Chile’s import behavior shows two clear trends:
1. Increasing Demand with Flexible Sourcing
Importers are prioritizing:
- Stable supply chains
- Faster delivery
- Product adaptability
The rise of Colombia and the decline of Ecuador highlight how logistics and geographic proximity are influencing purchasing decisions.
2. Growing Preference for Processed Tuna
According to FAO GLOBEFISH, global tuna trade is increasingly driven by ready-to-eat and processed products.
Chile reflects this trend, with strong demand for:
- Frozen tuna loin
- Canned and processed tuna
This aligns well with Vietnam’s strengths, reinforcing the long-term potential of Vietnam tuna exports to Chile.
