Vietnam shrimp growth maintains strong upward trend in August 2025

Bởi Meksea-Hien - September 15, 2025

The Vietnam shrimp industry continues to demonstrate impressive resilience and competitiveness in 2025. In August 2025, Vietnam shrimp exports reached USD 479 million, representing a 19% year-on-year increase. Over the first eight months of the year, cumulative export value amounted to USD 2.97 billion, a solid 23% growth compared to the same period in 2024. This steady momentum highlights the strength of Vietnam shrimp growth across multiple key markets and product categories.

Within the product portfolio, whiteleg shrimp remains the dominant category, accounting for more than 64% of Vietnam shrimp exports. Meanwhile, black tiger shrimp recorded a modest increase, and the category of “other shrimp” stood out with three-digit growth, driven primarily by strong demand for lobster. Despite raw material prices in Vietnam being relatively higher than those in competing countries, the stability of international demand continues to support the Vietnam shrimp industry and enhance farmer confidence.

China & Hong Kong: The Bright Spot of Vietnam Shrimp Growth

Exports to China and Hong Kong surged by 62% in August, with the cumulative figure in the first eight months hitting USD 836 million, up 75% year-on-year and accounting for nearly 30% of total Vietnam shrimp exports. The strongest demand has been recorded for live and fresh products, especially lobster and large-sized black tiger shrimp, which reinforces Vietnam’s competitive advantage compared to suppliers such as Ecuador and India. These premium and high-value segments have become a key growth engine, confirming China and Hong Kong as one of the most dynamic markets for Vietnam shrimp growth in 2025.

The US Market: Stable and Consistent

The US continues to play a crucial role in the Vietnam shrimp industry. In August, exports to this market reached USD 92.6 million, slightly up from last year, with total shipments over eight months nearly USD 500 million. The US remains one of the most important destinations for Vietnam shrimp exports, especially for value-added, convenience-oriented, and ready-to-cook products. With its preference for high-quality shrimp, the US market continues to provide stability and long-term potential for Vietnam shrimp growth.

EU Market: Strong Demand for Premium and Sustainable Shrimp

Exports to the EU maintained solid momentum, reaching USD 66.9 million in August (+19%) and bringing the cumulative eight-month value to USD 376 million (+17%). Leading buyers such as Germany, Belgium, and France continue to drive demand, while the Netherlands acts as a vital distribution hub. The EU market places particular emphasis on sustainability, traceability, and certified shrimp products, areas where the Vietnam shrimp industry is investing heavily. With annual demand expected to reach record levels, the EU represents a highly attractive growth area for Vietnam shrimp exports, particularly for deep-processed and certified sustainable products.

CPTPP & Other Key Markets: Diversifying Vietnam Shrimp Exports

The CPTPP bloc remains another strong growth driver. In August, exports to CPTPP countries exceeded USD 130 million (+40%), lifting the eight-month total to USD 829 million (+36%). Within this group, Japan and Australia are the top performers, with demand centered on convenient, ready-to-eat, and premium quality products. At the same time, South Korea and Taiwan recorded double-digit growth during the first eight months of 2025, further diversifying the global footprint of Vietnam shrimp exports.

Outlook: Sustained Vietnam Shrimp Growth Ahead

Looking ahead, the Vietnam shrimp industry is well-positioned to maintain growth in the remaining months of 2025, particularly during the global peak consumption season at the end of the year. While China, the EU, and CPTPP are expected to continue driving demand, the US will remain an essential market with stable purchasing trends.

To strengthen long-term competitiveness, Vietnamese exporters are focusing on:

  • Enhancing product value through innovation and diversification.
  • Expanding lines of value-added and processed shrimp with high consumer convenience.
  • Securing international certifications (ASC, organic, sustainability) to meet premium market requirements.
  • Building stronger farming linkages and supply chain partnerships to ensure stable supply, quality consistency, and competitive cost management.

With these strategies, the Vietnam shrimp industry continues to reinforce its global position, offering international buyers a reliable source of high-quality, sustainable, and diverse shrimp products. The momentum of Vietnam shrimp growth in 2025 is expected to remain strong, providing long-term opportunities for partners and importers worldwide.
