Vietnam Pangasius: A Strategic Pivot Toward Growth Markets in 2026

Bởi Joy Nguyen - January 20, 2026

According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producer (VASEP), the year 2025 concluded with Vietnam Pangasius exports surpassing the $2 billion mark, signaling a resilient recovery despite global economic fluctuations. For international buyers and seafood distributors, the latest data reveals a significant shift in sourcing patterns. While traditional powerhouses face headwinds, emerging regions within the CPTPP, ASEAN, and the Middle East are becoming the new focal points for procurement.

Vietnam Pangasius: Robust Growth Across CPTPP and Regional Blocs

The closing month of 2025 showcased a remarkable surge in demand from the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) member states. Import turnover from this bloc rose by 30% year-on-year in December. Looking at the full-year performance, the CPTPP market grew by 34%, reaching a total value of $367 million.

Key markets within this bloc demonstrated consistent demand. Mexico remains a primary destination with $77 million in imports, followed by the UK at $60 million and Colombia at $56 million. Specifically, December saw the UK increase its intake to $6 million (up 12%), while Japan jumped significantly by 33% to reach $4 million. These figures suggest that the tariff advantages provided by free trade agreements are effectively stabilizing the supply chain for buyers in these regions.

Beyond the CPTPP, the ASEAN and Middle Eastern markets have solidified their roles as reliable partners. ASEAN imports reached $203 million in 2025, a 20% increase, while the Middle East followed closely with $176 million, growing by 19%. This steady upward trajectory highlights a diversifying global appetite for pangasius, moving away from over-reliance on a single major economy.

Vietnam Pangasius: Product Segmentation and Sourcing Shifts

Vietnam pangasius export to China (including Hong Kong) reached USD 483 million in the first 10 months of 2025

The structure of pangasius imports remains dominated by frozen fillets (HS code 0304), which accounted for nearly $1.8 billion in 2025, a 9% increase from the previous year. This category continues to be the staple for international food service and retail sectors due to its versatility and consistent quality.

In contrast, the market for fresh, dried, and other frozen forms (HS code 03, excluding 0304) saw a slight contraction of 0.7%, totaling $377 million. However, the most notable trend for forward-looking importers is the rise of Value-Added Products (VAP) under HS code 16. Although still a smaller portion of the total volume at $51 million, this segment grew by 8% in 2025. This indicates a growing consumer preference for ready-to-cook and processed seafood options, prompting Vietnamese processors to invest more heavily in deep-processing technology.

Vietnam Pangasius: Navigating the Challenges of 2026

As we move further into 2026, the landscape for Vietnam pangasius import is facing a pivotal transition. The primary concern for the industry is the imposition of a counter-tax of approximately 20% in the US market. This regulatory hurdle has notably reduced the price competitiveness of Vietnamese products in North America, a trend that became evident during the export slump in December 2025.

For global procurement managers, this shift necessitates a strategic realignment. The industry is currently pivoting toward markets like Brazil, which has shown strong signals of growth despite being primarily focused on frozen fillets. To maintain a competitive edge, Vietnamese exporters are being urged to focus on two critical areas: deep processing and sustainability.

The future of the trade will likely depend on the ability to provide high-value, processed products that meet stringent international certifications. Buyers should expect a push toward more diverse product portfolios and a stricter adherence to environmental and social governance (ESG) standards, ensuring that the pangasius supply chain remains stable and reputable throughout 2026.
