Vietnam Pangasius Export to China: Current Performance and Market Challenges
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam pangasius export to China (including Hong Kong) reached USD 483 million in the first 10 months of 2025, a slight increase of 1% compared to the same period in 2024. October alone recorded USD 73 million, up 19% year-on-year, marking the highest monthly export value since the beginning of the year. China currently accounts for nearly 27% of Vietnam’s total pangasius export value, reaffirming the importance of the Vietnam pangasius export to China market.

After slower growth in Q3/2025, demand from China rebounded strongly in October. However, sustaining this momentum will depend on domestic consumption trends in China and rising competition from other regional seafood products.
One of the most significant challenges comes from the increasing domestic supply of Chinese tilapia. As export barriers remain, China is prioritizing local consumption of tilapia—a cost-competitive product that directly competes with Vietnamese frozen pangasius fillets. Although the U.S. recently lowered tariffs on Chinese tilapia from 55% to 45% and delayed further retaliatory tariffs until November 2026, the overall rate remains high. This continues to limit Chinese tilapia exports to the U.S., making it likely that China will push more tilapia into its domestic market during Q4, creating additional competitive pressure for Vietnamese pangasius exporters.
Strategic Importance of the Chinese Market and Long-Term Development Directions
Despite increasing competition, China remains a core market for Vietnam’s pangasius sector. Demand for frozen pangasius fillets remains stable due to their affordability and suitability for the mass consumer segment. Additionally, Vietnam benefits from geographical proximity and lower logistics costs compared to more distant suppliers, further supporting the growth of Vietnam pangasius export to China.

While China remains one of the most important destinations for Vietnam’s pangasius, the market’s evolving dynamics highlight the need for continuous product innovation. As Chinese consumers increasingly diversify their seafood choices, Vietnam’s pangasius industry is proactively developing more value-added and deeply processed products to better meet market preferences and enhance competitiveness.
At the same time, Vietnam continues to strengthen its presence in China while expanding outreach to additional global markets. This balanced approach helps ensure stable export performance and supports the long-term development of the pangasius sector.
With the festive season approaching, Vietnam pangasius export to China is expected to maintain positive momentum in the final months of 2025, supported by strong seasonal demand and improving market sentiment.
As global demand continues to rise, partnering with a trusted and experienced supplier becomes essential. To meet this need, Meksea proudly delivers high-quality Vietnam pangasius to markets worldwide, meeting international standards and expectations.
