Top the Market Import the Vietnam Fishcake and Surimi in January 1 to August 31 2025

Bởi Meksea-Hien - September 23, 2025

During the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam fishcake and surimi exports demonstrated a powerful surge, cementing their position as one of the most competitive seafood categories in global trade. According to recent trade data, shipments totaled nearly USD 228 million, a sharp 26% increase compared with the same period last year. This success reflects both stable demand from Asia and an unexpected boost from new destinations such as the European Union and China.

I. Top the Market Import the Vietnam Fishcake and Surimi in January 1 to August 31

1. The Asia market : Remains the essential market for fishcake and surimi

For Vietnam, Asia remains the essential market for fishcake and surimi. Two countries dominate the import map:

  • South Korea imported around USD 56 million,
  • Thailand followed closely with USD 53 million.

These nations are not only large end-consumers but also play the role of processing and redistribution hubs, supplying products onward to nearby regions. Their demand ensures that Vietnam maintains a consistent export base.

Meanwhile, the CPTPP bloc contributed an additional layer of growth. Exports reached USD 37 million, marking a 24% expansion year-on-year. Japan led within the bloc, taking nearly USD 21 million worth of goods, which represents a 22% rise. Japanese buyers continue to favor premium processed seafood, and Vietnamese fishcake and surimi fit well into this demand profile.

Despite the strength, there were some market nuances. South Korea, despite being the largest buyer, recorded a slight decline of more than 2% compared to 2024, suggesting short-term fluctuations in consumption patterns.

2. EU market

While Asia secures Vietnam’s foundation, the real surprise in 2025 comes from the EU and China & Hong Kong.

The EU market expanded dramatically, with imports of fishcake and surimi climbing 60% to nearly USD 20 million. As inflation pressures ease, European consumers are increasingly turning to mid-range, convenient seafood products. Countries like Lithuania became standout performers, where import value leapt 69%. This confirms that Vietnamese suppliers are leveraging tariff advantages under the EVFTA to win more European market share.

3. China & Hong Kong market

At the same time, China & Hong Kong emerged as another bright spot, importing USD 31 million worth of Vietnamese fishcake and surimi, an impressive 50% jump. China’s vast population and its growing demand for both direct consumption and reprocessing make it a natural growth engine for Vietnam’s exporters.

On the other hand, the United States has not kept pace. Imports during the first eight months of the year barely rose by 2%, settling at just under USD 7 million. Persistent tariff issues and cautious import behavior continue to restrain the U.S. market.

II. Prospects for the Remainder of 2025

Looking forward, Vietnam fishcake and surimi sector is well-positioned to sustain momentum. The global seafood market is shifting toward alternative proteins and ready-to-use products, exactly where surimi products excel due to their flexibility, affordability, and wide appeal.

  • Asia will remain the cornerstone of growth, offering stability and the advantage of close geographic proximity.
  • The EU promises continued recovery, with a growing preference for affordable, easy-to-prepare products.
  • China represents one of the most promising opportunities, given its scale and appetite for versatile surimi products.

Still, the path ahead is not without challenges. Regional competitors such as India, Thailand, and China are aggressively expanding their own fishcake and surimi exports, intensifying price pressure. Rising costs for logistics and raw materials also pose risks. Moreover, stricter requirements on sustainability, traceability, and food safety from importing countries mean Vietnamese processors must continually invest in higher standards.
