According to VASEP, Thailand continues to rank as the fourth largest single-country importer of Vietnamese Pangasius, following China, the U.S., and Brazil. By mid-July 2025, Vietnam’s Pangasius exports to Thailand had reached a total value of USD 41 million, representing a 32% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Particularly notable is the surge in the first half of July alone, with export value exceeding USD 4 million, up 105% year-on-year — a strong indicator of growing demand in the Thai market.
Data from the International Trade Centre (ITC) confirms that Vietnam is currently the largest supplier of white fish to Thailand, contributing approximately 50% of the country’s total white fish imports, predominantly through Pangasius. While other countries such as the U.S., Russia, China, and New Zealand have also increased exports to Thailand, they remain behind Vietnam in terms of volume and market share.
Among all imported white fish products, frozen Pangasius fillets (HS code 030462) from Vietnam are the most preferred by Thai consumers. In the first five months of 2025, Thailand imported more than USD 25 million worth of frozen Pangasius fillets from Vietnam — accounting for 47% of its total white fish imports — with a 28% growth compared to the same period last year.
Besides Pangasius, Thailand has also ramped up imports of other white fish products, particularly Alaska pollock. In the same period, imports of frozen Alaska pollock (HS 030494) exceeded USD 10 million (+112%), making up 19% of total white fish imports, while frozen Alaska pollock fillets (HS 030475) reached over USD 7 million, up 194%, accounting for 13%.
Amid challenges in key markets such as the U.S. — especially due to the impact of retaliatory tariffs — Thailand has emerged as a promising and stable destination for Vietnamese Pangasius exports, alongside the EU and Middle East. With similar taste preferences, familiar consumer habits, and consistent demand, Thailand is increasingly viewed as a strategic growth market for Vietnam’s Pangasius industry in 2025 and beyond. These are the resons why Vietnam Pangasius to be the most preferred white fish in Thailand
