1. China became the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood. 

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s total seafood export turnover in the first four months of 2025 (1/1/2025 – 15/4/2025) reached approximately $2.84 billion USD, marking a 21.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Especially, this period saw a major shift in Vietnam’s seafood export landscape: China has officially surpassed the U.S to become the largest importer of Vietnamese seafood. Precedently U.S had held this position for several consecutive years.

2. Vietnam’s Top Seafood Importing Markets

  • CPTPP: Vietnamese seafood exports to CPTPP member countries reached around $803 million in the first months of 2025, an increase of 28.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
  • China: Nearly $612 million in imports from Vietnam
  • United States: $431 million, increasing 10.1% compared to the same period in 2024. But in the first half of April, the seafood export turnover of the US was nearly $53.6 million, declining 21.5%. 
  • EU: $297 million, up to 10.5 % compared to 2025

In April, many countries reduced their seafood imports from Vietnam due to tariffs imposed by the U.S. Among them, the U.S. experienced the most significant decline, with imports dropping by up to 21.5%. Other affected markets included South Korea and Russia.

However, some countries saw a notable increase in seafood imports from Vietnam. In the first two weeks of April, seafood export turnover to Brazil reached nearly $6.74 million, marking a 30.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, exports to Taiwan reached $33.35 million, up 23.9%.
