Strengthens the Vietnam tilapia’s position in the global supply chain

Bởi Meksea-Hien - November 14, 2025

MEKSEA.COM – According Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP),  Rabobank forecasts that worldwide tilapia production will surpass 7 million tons in 2025, supported by strong recoveries in major producing countries. Within this landscape, Vietnam is becoming one of the most dynamic and promising Vietnam tilapia suppliers, gaining attention for its rapid expansion and ability to respond quickly to global market shifts.

Vietnam emerges as a Fast-growing tilapia supplier

Tilapia During the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam’s tilapia exports reached USD 57.34 million, marking an impressive year-on-year growth of more than 330%.
Export momentum peaked in August, nearly USD 10 million in a single month that  showcases Vietnamese producers’ agility and improved capacity to meet demand.
Thanks to: Improved farming standards, More consistent product quality, Strengthened processing capabilities, Vietnam is gradually widening its reach to new destinations beside the U.S – The most significant market in  Vietnam.

However, industry analysts expect export volumes to ease slightly in Q4 as U.S. inventories increase after heavy imports earlier in the year. Instead of viewing this as a setback, it highlights a strategic turning point for Vietnam.

Challenges for traditional suppliers create room for Vietnam

Challenges for traditional tilapia suppliers

China: the world’s largest tilapia producer (1.6 million tons/year) is being heavily affected by a 55% tariff on exports to the U.S., causing decreased orders and record-high inventory levels.
Brazil: once considered a potential alternative supplier, has also faced a 50% U.S. tariff since August, resulting in slowed exports and rising production costs.

Both countries are redirecting more products to their domestic markets, but this has had limited effectiveness due to lower selling prices that cannot offset rising farming costs. As a result, producers—especially small and mid-sized enterprises—are under intense price pressure, contributing to weakened market confidence.

With both suppliers struggling to redirect product domestically or maintain profitability, buyers are increasingly exploring alternative and more stable sources  and Vietnam has stepped into this space with strong momentum.

Turning Short-term momentum into long-term product value

Global demand for tilapia continues to rise, supported by a shift toward sustainable, versatile, and consistently priced whitefish products. As markets look for stable, high-quality supply, Vietnam is strengthening its position by focusing on what buyers value most: Product quality, reliability, and adaptability in processing.

Vietnam’s tilapia industry is expanding production while improving raw material quality, farming practices, and processing standards. This allows suppliers to offer a wide range of products that meet diverse market needs, including:

  • Well-trimmed tilapia fillets (skinless/boneless, deep-skinned)
  • Premium whole-round and gutted tilapia
  • Value-added items such as breaded fillets, marinated products, ready-to-cook and retail-packed formats
  • Customized cuts tailored to foodservice, retail, or industrial processing requirements

With ongoing investments in improved genetics, modern farming systems, and sustainability certifications, Vietnam can deliver better texture, cleaner flavor, and consistent specifications – The factors buyers prioritize when evaluating long-term partners.

As global production grows and consumers increasingly seek eco-friendly protein options, Vietnam is well-positioned to supply high-quality tilapia that meets international standards while offering competitive pricing and reliable year-round availability.
For importers, retailers, and foodservice operators, this creates a dependable sourcing option that aligns with evolving market expectations for quality, safety, and sustainability.
