Quick view
US market – A bright spot in shrimp exports in November 2024
In November 2024, the value of shrimp exports to the US reached more than 55 million USD, up 9% over the same period last year. In the 11 months, shrimp exports to this market reached 702 million USD, up 10%. Wholesale shrimp prices in the US recorded strong growth in the second week of December, which was attributed to concerns about increased shipping costs and supply chain pressures. Consumer demand during the holiday season in the US is expected to improve, contributing to creating momentum for shrimp exporting businesses.
Added value from processed products and export shrimp price advantage
Export shrimp prices, especially whiteleg shrimp, are on an upward trend, bringing better profits to businesses. At the same time, domestic shrimp raw material prices are also maintained at a positive level, creating favorable conditions for production and export activities.
Value-added processed shrimp products are growing strongly. Showing the right direction of businesses in meeting high-end consumer demand and increasing commercial value.
Challenges and sustainable direction for Vietnam’s shrimp industry
Despite encouraging achievements, Vietnam’s shrimp industry still faces many challenges. To compete in the international market, businesses need to improve product quality and reduce production costs. Improve management of important stages such as seed quarantine, disease management, farming density, and market demand forecasting. Increase production according to the value chain associated with international standards and increase income for shrimp farmers.
Shrimp farmers also need to change their mindset, focusing on sustainable and effective development instead of just chasing output. The trend of environmentally friendly high-tech shrimp farming, and applying biotechnology will be the key for the shrimp industry to adapt to climate change and meet the strict requirements of import markets.
Vietnam needs to continue to promote quality improvement, invest in technology, and promote sustainable solutions to maintain growth momentum in shrimp exports. This is not only a strategic step to affirm the country’s position but also helps the shrimp industry develop sustainably and effectively in the long term.
