Saudi Arabia becomes Vietnam’s 3rd largest tuna importer
MEKSEA.COM – According to the statistics of Vietnam Customs, Saudi Arabia is Vietnam’s 3rd largest tuna importer after the US and Canada. The proportion of tuna export value to this market accounts for 4% of total Vietnam’s tuna export value in the first four months of 2022.
Since the beginning of September 2020, Saudi Arabia has allowed importing tuna into this market. Which renovation opened up a new market for Vietnam’s tuna industry, especially in the context that seafood exports to many markets are facing difficulties due to the impact of Covid-19.
By July 2021, the first tuna shipments from Vietnam were exported to this market. After 9 months, the value of Vietnam’s tuna exports to this market increased from 85,000 USD in July 2021 to nearly 5 million USD in March 2022, an increase of 57 times. Frozen tuna meat/loin with code HS0304 are Vietnam’s main export products to this potential market, accounting for 99% of total export value.
Saudi Arabia is a landlocked country with no fishing industry. People in Saudi Arabia prefer fresh and frozen seafood products and canned goods. Therefore, this is a potential market for Vietnamese tuna businesses to increase exports. Not only that, but this is also the 12th largest tuna import market in the world in 2020 in terms of value
