MEKSEA.COM – According to General Department of Customs statistics, Vietnam’s tuna exports in June 2022 reached over 91 million USD, up 43% over the same period last year. Thus, in the first 6 months of the year, tuna exports increased by 56%, which is very positive growth.

Specifically, tuna exports in June 2022 reached over 91 million USD, up 43% YOY. Cumulative 6 months, tuna exports increased by 56%, reaching 553 million USD, accounting for nearly 10% of total seafood export turnover with the leading products were loin tuna, and frozen cut tuna, earning 377 million USD, up 122%.

In which, the US is the largest tuna import market of Vietnam with a turnover of more than 251 million USD, up 102% over the same period last year with tuna loin product items are attracted.

In the EU market, fresh and frozen tuna products from Vietnam are preferred. Moreover, most imported products are consumed in Japanese restaurant chains, Asian restaurants, retail stores, schools, etc. In the year’s first half, tuna exports to the EU increased by 9%.

In the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Canada is the largest market, accounting for nearly 5% of total tuna export value. Vietnam is also the second largest tuna supplier to Canada, accounting for 12% of the country’s total tuna imports (in 2021). In addition, tuna exports to Japan, Mexico, Chile, Germany, etc. also grew positively.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that tuna exports in the first half of this year grew very positively. This growth is thanks to the recovery of trade and business activities of the global market after a long time of the epidemic. Food prices increased 20-40% compared to the beginning of the year, chicken prices in the US reached a record and increased 3 times compared to the previous year. Facing that situation, many importers are thinking about replacing with tuna protein products. This is considered an advantage that contributes to increasing the productivity of Vietnam’s tuna exports.
