MEKSEA.COM – The Islamic Republic of Iran is one of Vietnam’s seafood consumption markets, with some products exported there including canned tuna and tilapia. In recent years, Iran has shown a growing preference for Vietnamese pangasius due to its suitability for the tastes of consumers in that country.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, in April 2024, Vietnamese pangasius exports to Iran reached nearly $700,000, triple the amount compared to the same period in 2023. The value of Vietnamese pangasius exports to this Islamic nation in April 2024 was also recorded as the highest since September 2022. By the end of April 2024, Vietnamese pangasius exports to this West Asian country amounted to over $1.2 million, a 17% increase compared to the same period last year, mainly due to declines of 37% and 84% in the first two months of this year.

Over the past five years, Vietnamese pangasius exports to Iran have continuously experienced impressive growth. Notably, in 2022, which was consistent with the overall trend of Vietnamese pangasius exports worldwide following the opening up post-Covid-19, it recorded the strongest growth with a value of nearly $5 million, a 137% increase compared to 2021. The value of Vietnamese pangasius exports to Iran in 2022 accounted for 83% of the total seafood exports to this country. In 2023, Vietnamese pangasius exports to Iran reached over $4.1 million, a 12% decrease compared to 2022, accounting for 66% of the total seafood export value to this market.

Iran almost does not consume Vietnamese pangasius fillet products. Unlike most other markets that prefer fresh pangasius, consumers in Iran tend to consume more frozen/dried pangasius products.

In April 2024, Vietnam exported nearly $700,000 worth of frozen pangasius to Iran, triple the amount compared to April 2023. In the first four months of this year, Vietnam exported nearly $1 million worth of pangasius.
