Tuna is well known for being rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins like B12 and D which make it a healthy choice for the heart, brain, and muscles. With such impressive nutrition, it’s no surprise that tuna comes in many varieties. But have you ever thought about how many types of tuna there are? Let’s scroll down below!!!

How many types of tuna?

There are 15 known species of tuna, and they belong to five different groups, or what scientists call “genera.” Among them, the most well-known and economically important are the “true tunas”, which belong to the genus Thunnus.

In the past, people thought there were only seven Thunnus species, and that Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna were just two versions of the same species. But in 1999, scientists confirmed through DNA and body structure studies. That they are actually two separate species. The Thunnus group is also divided into two smaller groups:

  • Thunnus (Thunnus) – the bluefin group
  • Thunnus (Neothunnus) – the yellowfin group

Several of these species are highly valuable in commercial fisheries, including yellowfin, skipjack, bigeye, albacore, and the three bluefin tunas (Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern).
Skipjack and yellowfin tunas are commonly used in canned products, grilled dishes, and tuna salads served in restaurants. On the other hand, bluefin tuna is especially prized for its rich flavor and texture. Which is a staple in high-end sushi restaurants.

Vietnam is a major player in the global tuna industry, exporting to markets like the U.S., EU, and Japan. The country mainly focuses on three key types of tuna: Yellowfin, Skipjack, and Bigeye.

Yellowfin Tuna is the most commonly exported. It’s prized for its firm texture and is used in fresh, frozen, and canned products. Yellowfin is especially popular in high-end markets thanks to its quality and versatility.

Skipjack Tuna is smaller and more abundant. It’s mainly used for canned tuna, making it a cost-effective option for large-scale production. Vietnam exports significant volumes of Skipjack to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Bigeye Tuna is known for its high fat content and rich flavor, making it ideal for sashimi and sushi. Though less common than Yellowfin, it is highly valued in premium markets like Japan and Korea.

Together, these three species form the backbone of Vietnam’s tuna industry, each serving different needs of the global seafood market.
