Export of Pangasius Fish Exceeds Halfway Mark, Aiming for $1.8 Billion in 2024

MEKSEA.COM –According to Vietnam Customs, the export value of pangasius fish reached nearly $172 million in June 2024, an increase of 20% compared to the same period last year. Cumulative exports in the first six months of this year reached $918 million, up 5% compared to the first half of 2023.

Regarding product structure, frozen pangasius fillets under HS code 0304 remain the main export product to various markets. As of the end of June 2024, exports of this product reached $739 million, up 3% compared to the same period, accounting for 80% of the total share. Exports of dried pangasius and other frozen products (whole, cut, fish bladder, etc., under HS code 03 excluding HS code 0304) in the first half of this year reached $162 million, up 17% compared to the same period, accounting for 18% of the total share. The remaining 2% share belongs to value-added pangasius products under HS code 16, with an export value of $17 million in the first six months of 2024, up 28% compared to the same period in 2023.

 

 

China & Hong Kong continue to be the largest importers of Vietnamese pangasius in June. In June 2024, exports to China & Hong Kong reached $56 million, an increase of 16% compared to June 2023. In the first half of this year, exports to this market reached more than $258 million, a decrease of 8% compared to the same period.

The U.S. is the second largest importer of Vietnamese pangasius after China. In the middle of this year, the U.S. consumed $27 million worth of pangasius, up 22% compared to June 2023, although down 9% compared to the previous month. The export value of Vietnamese pangasius to the U.S. in the first six months of this year reached $160 million, up 14% compared to the same period last year.

Vietnamese pangasius exports to the CPTPP market bloc also recorded positive growth in the first half of 2024, with an export value of $128 million, up 11% compared to the same period last year. In June 2024 alone, the export value to this market reached $25 million, up 21% compared to June 2023.

Additionally, some other individual markets also recorded positive growth in the import of Vietnamese pangasius in the first six months of 2024, including: Brazil reaching $52 million, up 42%; Thailand reaching $30 million, up 9%; Colombia reaching $22 million, up 40%; Saudi Arabia reaching $20 million, up 17%, etc.

Having gone through a challenging 2023, in the first half of this year, the entire industry has focused and seized every opportunity to export to various markets. In the second half of this year, consumption demand is expected to continue increasing as countries begin planning for festivals and holidays. The export price of pangasius is also expected to recover and gradually increase. In 2024, Vietnam’s pangasius exports are projected to reach $1.8 billion, up 6% compared to 2023.
