Export of Clams to the EU Shows Signs of Recovery
MEKSEA.COM – After a continuous decline in 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, Vietnam’s clam exports to the EU have shown an upward trend starting from the second quarter of 2024. However, the export value is still lower compared to the same period in 2022.
According to statistics from the Vietnam Customs, the export value of clams to the EU in April and May increased by 19% year-on-year. Cumulatively, in the first five months of 2024, the export value to this market increased by 5% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching nearly $26 million. However, this is still 25% lower compared to the same period in 2022.
Vietnam primarily exports frozen boiled clams to EU countries, accounting for 69% of the total export value, with the remaining being frozen clam meat.
Spain, Italy, and Portugal are the top three importers of Vietnamese clams, accounting for 90% of the total export value to the EU market. Compared to the first five months of 2023, exports to Spain and Italy have increased, while exports to Portugal have decreased.
Notably, among the EU countries, Spain has shown a continuous increase in clam imports in the first five months of 2024. Exports to this market reached over $10 million in the first five months, an increase of 29% compared to the same period in 2023.
According to businesses, the demand for mollusks in the EU market is showing signs of recovery after inflation. Additionally, the continued MSC certification for Ben Tre clams will be an opportunity for Vietnam to increase exports to this market.
