China and Hong Kong experience a sharp rise in shrimp imports from Vietnam

Bởi Meksea-Hien - September 6, 2025

According to Vietnam Customs, as of August 15, 2025, China and Hong Kong experience a sharp rise in shrimp imports from Vietnam, reached approximately USD 767 million, representing a sharp 76% increase compared to the same period last year. This market now accounts for nearly 29% of the country’s total shrimp exports, making it the fastest-growing destination for Vietnamese shrimp this year.

In just the first half of August alone, shrimp exports to China were valued at about USD 57 million, equivalent to nearly 30% of Vietnam’s total shrimp exports within only 15 days. This impressive performance underlines the country’s growing role as a major supplier to one of the world’s largest shrimp import markets.

Product Structure and Consumption Trends

Within the export product mix, the category of “other shrimp” (including lobster, sand shrimp, etc.) dominated. Notably, live, fresh, and frozen products in this group recorded triple-digit growth, reflecting strong consumer demand in China, particularly for premium live lobsters. At the same time, black tiger shrimp exports to China achieved double-digit growth, while whiteleg shrimp recorded a decline. However, demand for processed whiteleg shrimp rose significantly, indicating a shift in consumer preference toward more convenient and ready-to-eat products. This trend suggests that shrimp import buyers in China are diversifying their sourcing, with stronger interest in value-added shrimp products.

China’s Warm-Water Shrimp Imports Show Signs of Recovery

Data from China Customs revealed that in the first seven months of 2025, the country imported around 519,000 tons of frozen warm-water shrimp, a slight 2% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. Despite this, higher average prices—up 9% to USD 5.25/kg—pushed total import value to USD 2.73 billion, an increase of 7%. This indicates that although shrimp import volume has not yet fully recovered, the market is showing resilience with stronger value growth.

In July 2025 alone, import volume surged to over 90,000 tons—the highest level since early 2024—suggesting that China’s shrimp consumption has begun to recover after a sluggish period. Analysts believe that the steady rebound in shrimp import demand, coupled with rising prices, will continue to support exporters like Vietnam. With China remaining one of the top shrimp import destinations worldwide, Vietnam is well-positioned to capitalize on both the volume-driven and premium segments of this dynamic market.
