Australia: A Land of Opportunity for Shrimp Vietnam
Australia is becoming the potential market for seafood Vietnam especially shrimp Vietnam. Recently, Australia stands out as a promising destination thanks to its stable economy, strong demand for value-added seafood, and the advantages provided by free trade agreements.
Quick view
1. Growth Momentum and Consumer Trends
According to VASEP, in the first four months of 2025 alone, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to Australia reached nearly USD 77 million – an 8% increase compared to the same period last year. Over the long term, from 2019 to 2024, the export value to this market nearly doubled, rising from USD 127 million to over USD 240 million.
Whiteleg shrimp dominate, accounting for 95% of total export volume, with nearly half the value coming from processed products. Items such as shrimp skewers, steamed shrimp, peeled frozen shrimp, and shrimp balls are increasingly popular – particularly among young, busy, and high-income consumers in major cities.

Growth Momentum and Consumer Trends
Leveraging FTAs and Strong Bilateral Relations
Vietnam and Australia are both active members of key free trade agreements such as CPTPP, RCEP, and AANZFTA. These agreements not only reduce tariffs but also facilitate trade by simplifying customs procedures and aligning technical standards.
Importantly, the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024 has created a solid foundation for further cooperation in agriculture and seafood, driving both trade and investment.
Opportunities for shrimp Vietnam
Despite having a modest population of approximately 25.7 million, Australia is a high-potential market where consumers are willing to pay a premium for safe, convenient, and traceable food. The trend toward convenient, nutritious foods is accelerating—especially in the ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat segments, where Vietnam has a clear competitive edge.
A strong Vietnamese community in Australia (estimated at around 300,000 people) also plays an important role in promoting and supporting Vietnamese shrimp products. Meanwhile, processed seafood consumption in Australia continues to grow by 6–8% annually, despite the stable population.
Vietnamese shrimp holds a competitive advantage thanks to consistent quality, diverse product offerings, and advanced processing capabilities. Many Vietnamese enterprises have made significant investments in technology to maintain their position in demanding markets like Australia.
Despite many advantages, Vietnamese exporters still face several challenges. These include Australia’s strict biosecurity regulations and high logistics costs associated with long shipping times.

Opportunities for shrimp Vietnam
To fully capitalize on Australia’s potential, Vietnamese companies are intensifying trade promotion efforts by product segment, especially in high-demand states such as New South Wales and Victoria. Investments in cold-chain logistics and improvements to refrigerated container supply systems are also being prioritized to ensure product quality throughout the long-distance journey.
On the policy side, exporters hope to work with Australian authorities to simplify technical and administrative procedures, enabling faster and more efficient access for products such as whole shrimp and semi-processed items.
In addition, Vietnamese exporters are pursuing sustainable development strategies, including:
- Increasing the adoption of advanced deep-processing technologies,
- Developing private label products for major Australian retail chains like Woolworths and Coles,
- Enhancing supply chain transparency through digital traceability systems,
- Meeting international certifications such as ASC and BAP to strengthen consumer trust and improve competitive positioning.
